Reading Recovery

Sherry Jones is a Reading Recovery/Title 1 teacher here at Seymour School. She took the required training to become a certified Reading Recovery teacher in 1999-2000. Since then she has seen many students go from struggling readers to students who read with confidence and success.
Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention of
one-to-one tutoring for first graders. The goal of Reading Recovery is to reduce the number of first-grade students who have difficulty learning to read and write.
Students are selected for the program based on results of tests given to the first grade class.
After they are selected and permission has been given to be a part of the Reading Recovery program the students receive a 30 minute lesson each day for 12 -20 weeks.
During the lessons the specially trained teacher works on reading familiar books, letter identification, making and breaking words, writing a story, and reading a new book each day. Each lesson is very structured and tailored to fit the needs of each individual.
Students are expected to read at least one book a day at home with their parents/guardians and to put together the story they created that has been “cut up” by the teacher.
As soon as the students can meet grade level expectations and demonstrate that they can continue to work independently in the classroom, their lessons are “discontinued”, and new students can begin individual instruction.
In over 15 years of Reading Recovery in North America 82% of students who have completed the 12-20 week series of lessons can read and write with the average range of performance of the class.
Since Reading Recovery was started in Seymour 80% of the students have been “discontinued” at our location. Our district has also lowered the number of students who qualify for Special Ed and Title 1 and we feel that it’s largely due to this program.
88% of students who have been a part of the Reading Recovery program at Seymour have scored at or above 90% accuracy on the Basic Reading Inventory that was given to each student in grades 1- 6 last year.
There are over 600 Reading Recovery teachers in Iowa serving over 4,500 students each year.
We are fortunate to be one of the 200 schools in the state of Iowa who provide Reading Recovery to our students.
Mrs. Jones is currently looking for donations to update and replace some books for her program. If you are interested in making a donation please contact Sherry Jones or Mollie Banks.
