We made it through Grandparents Day/Week! Today was our final day of hosting grandparents for lunch, classroom visits, and the book fair. 3rd/4th-grade students enjoyed the day. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful week! Our students and staff had a great time, and we look forward to hosting this event again next year.

On a completely different note, our secondary students also had a special visitor today. Officer Darren Flaherty from the Iowa Highway Patrol spoke with our students about online safety. His presentation was relevant, meaningful, and an excellent opportunity to help ensure our kids stay safe.

📚 Building Reading Confidence – One Minute at a Time! ⏱️

K–4 families, be on the lookout! 👀
Starting soon, teachers will be sending home 60-second timed reading passages with students. Each student will read the same passage throughout the week, and families will help track words per minute and note any errors.

This quick daily practice helps students build reading confidence, speed, and accuracy. 💪

Kindergarten families — your packets will look a little different, focusing on letter sounds, sight words, and nonsense words to support early literacy skills.

Thank you for partnering with us to help your child grow as a reader! ❤️

Yesterday we held our October Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) Assembly, where this month’s focus was on being Self-Directed — taking ownership of your learning, actions, and goals. 💪

💡 Being Self-Directed means:

Taking responsibility for your choices and behavior

Setting personal goals and working hard to achieve them

Staying motivated even when things get tough

Reflecting on how to improve and grow

We also celebrated nearly 70 students who earned a GPA above 3.0 this quarter! 📚👏
Their academic success is a great example of what it means to be self-directed in action.

Meet the candidates night

Dear PK–4 Parents,
We’re excited to let you know that our Fall Party will be held on Thursday, October 30!

Students are welcome to bring their Halloween costumes to school if they choose, but please do not wear them to school in the morning. Around 1:30 p.m., students will change into their costumes and parade around to visit other classrooms. After this brief parade, students will change back into their school clothes and enjoy games, activities, and snacks in their classrooms.

Because we have many younger students who may be frightened by scary costumes, we ask that you avoid costumes that could be too frightening. Please use your best judgment. We want students to enjoy dressing up without having to refuse anyone from participating.

At this time, no volunteers are needed for the parties. If teachers need snacks or supplies, they will reach out to you directly.

Thank you for helping make this a fun and safe celebration for all our students!

Sincerely,
Mr. Moran

Seymour Community Schools to Offer “Skip the Trip” Iowa DOT Instruction Permit Knowledge Tests

Do you have a student ready to take the Iowa instruction permit knowledge test to start driving? Seymour Community Schools is now offering the test right here at Seymour High School as part of the Iowa Department of Transportation’s “Skip the Trip” program.

By partnering with the Iowa DOT, Seymour High School can save families time and the hassle of making a trip to a driver’s license service center for testing. Students will take the web-based test in a familiar environment, helping to reduce test anxiety and improve success rates.

Tests are supervised by trained school staff to ensure test integrity. Testing will be scheduled through the school.

Once a student passes the test, they will receive an email confirmation. The student must take that email, along with the required identification documents, to a driver’s license service center to receive their instruction permit.

If you have questions, please contact the school or have your student ask the secretaries in the office for more information.
